COMSATS University Islamabad and CERN Redefined Academic Alliance

Islamabad, November 10, 2023 – COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) welcomed a four-member delegation from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) on November 10, 2023. The delegation was headed by the Director of International Relations, Ms. Charlottee L. Warakaulle. The accompanied officials comprised Prof. Emmanuel Tsesmelis, Head of Associate and Non-Member State Relations, Dr. Lucia Silvestris, Deputy Spokesperson CMS Experiment, and Dr. Marco Van Leeuwen, AICE Spokesperson.

The meeting took place at Islamabad Campus was attended by Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar, Rector, Prof. Dr. Sohail Asghar, In-charge Islamabad Campus, Dr. Tahir Naeem, Director, P&D/HRD, Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head International Office, Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, Senior Manager, International Office, Dr. Najeeb ur Rehman, Head of Physics Department, Dr. Uzma Tabassum, Associate Professor, Physics Department, Dr. Yasir Ali, Assistant Professor, Physics Department, Dr. Syed Rais Ikram from Physics Department, Mr. Raja Shahbaz Ali, Assistant Professor, R&D Lab.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar, Rector, CUI, the discussions centred on the augmentation of research partnerships, introduction of a proposal for a research exchange program within the department of Physics and enhancing scholarly engagements. The delegation also engaged in a tour of university’s research laboratories and explored the prospects of initiating grid operations, as suggested by Prof. Dr. Sohail Asghar, In-charge Islamabad Campus.

The meeting signifies a pivotal step towards fostering collaborative initiatives in student and faculty exchanges, as well as advanced research projects. The collaborative efforts promise to yield advancements in scientific exploration and international academic partnership. As both institutions look ahead, the shared vision is to contribute to the global scientific community and propel advancements in the field of physics.

Meanwhile, Dr. Uzma Tabassam, ALICE team leader, Associate professor from department of Physics presented the 5 years review report of ALICE-CERN collaboration in PAEC on 9th November. Four members from CERN were present in the PAEC to review the involvement of CUI members in CERN activities.

Further, Dr. Tahir Naeem and Dr. Uzma Tabassum also joined the meeting of CERN delegates with Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman, HEC. During the meeting it was discussed to provide funding by HEC for researchers who are engaged with different projects of CERN from Pakistani HEIs.
