The lectures were given on topics like introduction to Digital Image Processing, basic concepts, filtering in spatial domain and filtering in frequency domain. Participants also had the opportunity to work in lab sessions based on study of filtering in spatial domain and filtering in frequency domain. Lab work was done on the Matlab software. On the last two days, the participants were given the task of working on two projects. The first project the implementation of real time object recognition on Matlab and the second project was based on person identification using iris scanning. The closing ceremony of 7-day training was held on 9th September 2009 in the Seminar Hall. The ceremony was attended by faculty and students. Certificates of appreciation were distributed among the organizer and the participants.

5- Day Training on Optimized C Code in Microcontroller Applications
17th August 2009 to 21st August

5- Day Training on Optimized C Code in Microcontroller Applications was conducted at department of Electrical Engineering from 17th August 2009 to 21st August. The instructor was Mr. Habib Ahmed Noor, Lecturer, EE, CIIT. The workshop was conducted at the Project Lab CIIT main campus, Islamabad. Workshop was assisted by Mr. Mehdi Abbas, Research Associate, EE, CIIT and Mr. M. Arham Gulzar, student BSTE-6.

This training workshop was intended to give its participants an in depth view and training on Embedded C Language Programming, Efficient C Embedded Code for Microcontroller Applications and Optimized C Embedded Code for Microcontroller Applications. These topics along with Basics of Assembly Language were covered in 5 modules, each for one day of training. Each daily module was comprised of a lecture followed by group discussion on topics covered in the lecture. This was followed by a 3 hour lab work session. In these sessions, the participants used the concepts taught in the lecture. Work was done on software like WinAVR, Pinnacle, VMLAB 7, Proteaus and IAR Embedded Systems. Daily assessment was also done by a test after each lab session. Students as well as two faculty members and two lab staff members also participated in the training.

The closing ceremony of the training workshop was held in the project lab. Chief Guest, Head EE, Dr Shahzad Malik distributed certificates of appreciation among the participants and the organizers. The ceremony was attended by faculty and students. The chief guest appreciated the efforts of the young faculty members like Mr. Habib Ahmed Noor for organizing such an event and also he encouraged students to actively participate in future training, seminars and workshops.

Workshop on Antenna Design
23rd to 31st July 2009

The Microwave and Antennas Group at department of Electrical Engineering organized a 7days workshop on antenna design and analysis from 23rd to 31st July 2009. The organizers were Dr. Izhar Ul Haq , Mr. Khurram Saleem Alimgeer, Mr. Syed Muzahir Abbas, Syed Hasan Ali Shah, Muhammad Mueen Ansari and Muhammad Usman. The workshop was conducted at the Microwave Lab CIIT main campus, Islamabad.

Work was done on HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) software. The objectives of the workshop were learning the HFSS software in detail, designing antennas in HFSS and analysis of the designed antennas.

HFSS is versatile software with applications in Antennas, Microwave transitions, Waveguide components, RF filters, Three-dimensional discontinuities and Passive circuit elements.
The workshop was attended by both many faculty as well as students. Participants were able to work on HFSS from the very basic up to the level of designing their own antennas and effectively analyzing them.

The closing ceremony was held on 31st July, 2009 in the Seminar Hall. Chief Guest was Birg (retd.)Muhammad Rafi Butt. Faculty, students and participants attended the ceremony.

Workshop on FPGAs
21st to 23rd July, 2009

”An Interactive Workshop on Field Programmable Arrays (FPGAs)” was held from 21st to 23rd July, 2009 at Chak Shahzad Campus, CIIT, Islamabad. Workshop consisted of interactive lectures and lab sessions. Total number of participants were 52. Though most of the participants were the students from EE department (4th to 8th semester), but 4 students from Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and two research Associates from CAST, CIIT also participated.

Workshop was organized by Mr. Shahzad Asif, Lecturer, EE Department with the help of students of BET, 8th semester, Raheel Maqsood Hashmi, Khurram Shehzad, Assad Ali, M. Tahir Naveed Baig and Muhammad Irfan

Speaker/Trainer for this workshop was Mr. Shahzad Asif, Lecturer, EE Department. Mr. Shahzad has done MS(System-on-Chip) from Linköping University, Sweden.

Workshop was aimed on basic training on VHDL and FPGA. Participants learnt to write a synthesizable VHDL code, how to simulate it using ModelSim, and then program it on Spartan-I FPGA. The software tool used for syntheses was Xilinx 4.1i. The target of the workshop was to help understand the basic design flow for FPGA based design, internal circuitry of FPGA, and how the hardware is implemented in FPGA. Also understanding the different steps of Xilinx Design Flow were also taught and practiced. Furthermore the participants learnt to write the testbench for checking the design, simulate the design using Modelsim, synthesize and implement the code using Xilinx and program VHDL code on FPGA and test it.

Closing ceremony of the workshop was held on 23rd July, 2009. The participants and organizers were awarded certificate. Chief Guest of the ceremony was Dr. Atta-ullah-kalim.
