COMSATS University Hosts Insightful Session for the Students on Study & Scholarship Opportunities in the UK
Islamabad, May 2, 2025 — The International Office of COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), in partnership with the British Council, organized a comprehensive and highly engaging awareness session titled “Study and Scholarship Opportunities in the UK”, here in Islamabad Campus on May 2, 2025 drawing significant interest from students aspiring to pursue higher education in the UK. Held at the Video Conferencing Room, the session welcomed final-semester students from the disciplines of computer science, physics, engineering, and management sciences in person, while participants from CUI’s seven campuses—alongside international students—joined virtually. The event was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Mr. Arif Awan, Senior Program Officer, and Mr. Ghazanfar Ali of the International Office of CUI, whose meticulous coordination ensured an impactful session.
A Vision of Global Academic Pursuit
The proceedings commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head International Office of CUI, who shared his own inspiring academic journey in the UK. A recipient of the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship, Dr. Omer pursued both his MS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London, completing his doctorate in 2012. Despite an offer from the University of Oxford, he chose to return to Pakistan, driven by a passion for knowledge dissemination and national service. Dr. Omer also introduced the newly established UK Desk at the International Office, which will act as a one-stop information hub for students seeking to study in the UK. Mr. Zubair Iqbal, UK Desk Officer, too assist students with updated information and guidance.
A Return Home: From COMSATS University to the British Council
The keynote speaker, Mr. Haroon Rashid, Manager of Higher Education Mobility at the British Council, Islamabad, a proud alumnus of COMSATS University Islamabad and the University of Nottingham, captivated the audience with a compelling and informative presentation. He began by painting a rich portrait of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, describing its four nations—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—each with its own capital, culture, and academic institutions of repute. He emphasized the UK’s stature as a global academic powerhouse, home to iconic institutions like the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, which consistently rank among the world’s top three universities. “The UK offers a blend of academic rigor, multicultural diversity, and global career prospects that is truly unmatched,” he stated.
A Welcoming Educational Landscape
Mr. Rashid highlighted the UK’s inclusive educational environment, where students from over 150 countries converge to pursue academic excellence. From industrial linkages and global faculty to personal counseling services and internship opportunities, UK universities are structured to support international students comprehensively. He introduced students to the Graduate Route, a post-study work visa scheme that allows international students to remain in the UK for up to two years (Bachelor’s/Master’s) or three years (PhD) after graduation. This route has transformed the UK into a more attractive and competitive destination for global talent.
Costs, Scholarships, and Practical Planning
A thorough breakdown of tuition fees was provided, ranging from £10,000 to £30,000, depending on university rankings and program types. Mr. Rashid encouraged students to factor in both course relevance and geographic affordability, noting that London, while prestigious, is more expensive than other UK cities. He clarified the distinctions between Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD) and full degree programs, and guided students through the popular fields of study for Pakistanis—including Business, Computing, Law, Engineering, and Social Sciences.
Mr. Rashid also elaborated on the extensive scholarship landscape in the UK. From automatic scholarships of up to £6,000 to merit-based and research-driven awards like the Chevening, Commonwealth, and GREAT Scholarships, opportunities abound for deserving candidates. “Every student has the potential to win a scholarship—academic background is not the only determinant,” he affirmed.
Resources, Applications, and Visa Guidelines
The official platform website study-uk.britishcouncil.org was emphasized as a comprehensive guide to courses, universities, scholarships, immigration processes, and student life in the UK. For undergraduate programs, students must apply via UCAS, while postgraduate and PhD applicants apply directly to their chosen universities—without any limitation on the number of applications. Students were advised to begin preparations six to nine months in advance, considering the September (the main) January, and April intakes.
The visa application process was also briefed by Mr. Rashid, which includes submission of financial proof, accommodation details, and a statement of intent to return to Pakistan upon completion of studies. Moreover, Mr. Rashid highlighted the IELTS waiver option available to CUI students. By obtaining an official letter from CUI confirming English as the medium of instruction, students may become eligible to bypass standard English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE—saving both time and cost.
In his vote of thanks, Mr. Arif Awan extended heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Haroon Rashid and the British Council for their enriching presentation. He also acknowledged Dr. Hammad Omer for his vision, encouragement, and personal insights, which added inspiration to the event. Mr. Awan appreciated the enthusiasm of the student body, the moderators, faculty, and the organizing team for their collective support.
The session concluded on a celebratory note with the presentation of a commemorative shield from Dr. Omer to Mr. Rashid, followed by a group photograph capturing the spirit of academic curiosity and international collaboration.
