Talk entitled: “Gender and Power in Digital Spaces: A Change or a Different Shade?”
24th May, 2023: International office and Department of Humanities, COMSATS University Islamabad Campus in collaboration with Human Resource Development Network (HRDN) had organized a talk entitled “Gender and Power in Digital Spaces: A Change or a Different Shade?”
The prime objective of conducting this talk was to create awareness about the digital divide, or technology gap and the difference in access to technology between male and female. As the female often have less access to technology and the internet compared to boys and men. The world needs to simultaneously rescue women with immediate measures, and on the other hand, strengthen the next generation to deal with super-fast technology and digitalization. There is dire need to implement laws and take suitable measurements so by using technology to provide educational resources, training opportunities, and access to information, we can empower women.
Dr. Shahla Tabassum, renowned scholar from Fatima Jinnah Women University
was the speaker of the event. She enlightened the students that how online usage of digital space has positive and negative consequences among the members inside and outside the families. She explained that Pakistan is a mix of cultures and communities, it is to understand how use of smartphones and their types of applications by different age group, gender, has impacted the family relations as well as its consequences on them. Moreover, how these new digital spaces have produced, reproduced, or challenged existing gender norms and the presence of power dynamics during online transformation within the families.
Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, Head International office specially thanked the chief guest for taking out the time from her busy schedule and for sharing such a wonderful talk which was very informative and at the same time very motivational for the students. He further added that International office of CUI is always endeavor to organize such kind of activity for our students apart from their academic activities.
