Department of Art & Design at COMSATS University Islamabad is an opportunity to reexamine and re-value the architectural education. The department was established with an inter-disciplinary philosophy, with the intent that architecture is a critical feature of a broader social and cultural context. The aim is to create holistic thinking about the conceptual basis of design. Architecture must flow from the mind of the architect always addressing the issues of tradition, function, climate responsive, structural stability and any other factor that impinges concepts of the solutions to a design problem.

The Department aims to deal with questions of tradition and modernity, comfort, environmental sustainability, appropriate architecture, not as separate subjects in an isolated manner but to take all these elements incorporated at the simple to complex levels so that these issues become an integral part of student thinking. At the end of the program students will not set out to do a "traditional" or "modern" design but will bring their own unique approach based on their vision, to continuously examine the context of the problem at hand and to discover within themselves solutions that are based on personal sensitivities and on critical thought process. The Department takes pride in having a strong faculty with years of extensive experience in architecture, design, and aesthetic studies. The faculty at the department is a unique combination of artists and scientists of modern built environment. Our faculty comes from a diverse background, each one adding a unique strength thus enabling us to bring out the best results. Our dynamic team of futurists is fully geared to bring efficient ideas to keep up with the pace of ever-changing context of the world.

Our curriculum and methodologies are dynamic, thus producing architects, artists and designers who are fully capable to undertake modern day challenges. Our focus is also to establish a link between academic and professional commitments. To conclude the architecture program is tailored to produce professionals who are adaptive to the current challenges of the modern-day environment.

Vision Statement

Art and design are the two basic components of culture and traditions of any society. To understand cultural heritage, one has to learn about its arts and design. The Department of Art and Design at COMSATS University Islamabad is an important step in the direction to recognize and acknowledge the role of cultural heritage in our society. The focus of the department is on inter-disciplinary approach where Bachelors of Fine Arts and Bachelors of Design, undergrad degree programs are the center of developing creative minds. The four-year degree, undergrad programs of Design and Fine Arts emphasis on the art and design of Pakistan and its region. The artists and designers in this context learn about the art and design developing at the regional level and global level. They are introduced to new developments in the fields of art and design. It helps in creating a cultural context, which is based on understanding of ideas and approaches that are founded on broader perspectives about the environment all around. This interdisciplinary approach of teaching arts and design allows the students to broaden their horizons and experiences. We aim to create innovative and critical thinkers with a deep understanding of traditions and the ability to challenge conventions. We pursue to develop an inclusive, creative community of artists and audiences seeking education, contemplation, inspiration, and dialogue.
