Program Overview
PhD program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology would strengthen understanding of the fundamental principles and mechanisms that govern life at the molecular level. By dissecting the key molecular mechanisms and biological processes this program will provide solutions to local as well as global problems related to the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. A vibrant and dynamic faculty is the backbone of our PhD program. Majority of the faculty related to this program has graduated from world’s best universities and have a strong academic and research background. Faculty has diverse research expertise ranging from basic animal sciences research to plant sciences to agricultural sciences, biotechnology, molecular genetics and bioinformatics. Basic and applied topics are being executed side by side in the milieu of this PhD program. The normal duration of this program is between 3 and 7 years (6 semesters to 14 semesters) which offer enough time to a student in order to explore his research ideas. We have adequate research facilities at the department to fulfill the requirements of this PhD program while different faculty members are actively involved in local as well as international research collaborations. A number of MoUs are in place with many local and international institutes to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in academia and research.
Entry Requirements
- A minimum of 18 years of education in a relevant field (Biosciences, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, or a related field).
- A minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent is expected.
- A research proposal-outlining intended research project demonstrating understanding of the research area, highlighting the significance of the research, and outlining the research objectives and methodology.
- Appear for an entrance test, which assesses your aptitude and subject-specific knowledge.
- Shortlisted candidates may be called for an interview. The interview aims to assess your motivation, research interests, and suitability for the program.
- Need to submit letters of recommendation from academic referees who can attest to your academic abilities, research potential, and suitability for doctoral studies.

Scholarships available
HEC offers indigenous Ph.D. scholarships for eligible students to study in higher education institutes of Pakistan. Ph.D. students may also receive a one-time scholarship by HEC to carry out part of their research work in world renowned universities for a period of six months under International Research Support Initiative program (IRSIP). Ph.D. studentships may also be available to work with a principal investigator in funded project of his area of expertise.
