Program Overview:

The mission of the Graduate Program in Bioinformatics offered by the Department of Biosciences is to train and build/prepare manpower to develop, design and interpret research questions and methodologies to solve multifaceted problems in various fields of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Following are the objectives of MS Bioinformatics program.

  • Familiarize students with the fundamental theories and applied knowledge of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
  • Prepare professionals who are able to contribute to the fields of comparative genomics, proteomics, pharmacogenomics, drug design, and forensics.
  • To integrate basic research, education, and internships/placements to advance the creation of new knowledge and to tackle scientific problems of biological relevance.
  • To bring students up to date on existing knowledge to address scientific challenges of the 21st century.
  • To develop solutions to pertinent problems in fields of health care, biotechnology, agriculture and pharmaceutical industries.
  • In addition to computational tools, provide students an opportunity to learn new techniques in various fields of life sciences such as Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Virology and Biotechnology.
  • Expose students to international research through seminars (Short term visits, workshops and conferences).
  • Prepare students for a variety of leadership positions in academic as well as research environments.

Entry Requirements:

  1. BS degree (16-year education) in the relevant field is required.
  2. Candidates should not have third divisions in their academic careers.
  3. A CGPA 2.5/4 in semester system and first division (60% marks) in annual system.
  4. NTS GAT General with 50% marks.


Research Opportunities:

Students of graduate program of Bioinformatics may have opportunity of working in any of these fields.

Next generation sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, data science, biostatistics, drug designing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, gene networks, mass spectrometry, cancer genomics, software development, database and web development, and computational chemistry.

  • An Improved Approach for Retrosynthetic Analysis of Bioorganic Molecules by Deep Learning.
  • Designing and Development of Retrosynthetic Pathway Detection Tool for Bio-organic Molecules.

Admitted students are offered a range of different merit as well as need-based scholarship opportunities from higher education commission of Pakistan. In some funded projects of different faculty members, generous scholarships are also offered to the admitted students based on merit and their academic achievements.
