The Department of Physics was established in Fall 2003 with the aim of producing highly competitive scientists, equipped with the most advanced technological tools of the modern era. It is committed to excellence in teaching and research and promoting a culture of learning and scientific enquiry. The department offers four-year B.S. programs in Physics and Electronics & Computing. It also has successful M.S., Ph.D. and the M.S. leading to Ph.D. program in Condensed Matter physics, Material Science, Plasma Physics, High energy physics, Computational physics, Laser photonics, Optoelectronic devices, Quantum Optics and Quantum Computing. The courses for these disciplines have been designed with the express aim of imparting a clear insight into basic sciences and developing strong experimental and technological skills according to the requirements of modern era. These programs provide a firm foundation for employment in industry and R & D organizations, as well opportunities to pursue academic and research-oriented careers. Currently, the department is offering following undergraduate and graduate programs:

  1. BS Physics
  2. BS Electronics and Computing
  3. MS Physics
  4. PhD Physics

The Department of Physics received a tremendous boost in 2005, when it was awarded a development grant by the Higher Education Commission, Govt. of Pakistan, to set up fabrication facilities for micro- and nano- sized electronic devices. In 2007 a further grant was approved to set up infrastructure, establish teaching and research labs for strengthening the academic programs.

Eventually, the Department of Physics has developed a strong and state of the laboratory infrastructure based on academic curriculum and advanced research and characterization facilities which are unique in Pakistan and make department of Physics stand out high among its contemporary competitors in other national universities.

The department has strived for excellence in education and research throughout in all previous years, which is evident from the number graduated students and high impact factor research publications (more than 1000 publications) that it has produced till to date. Currently, approximately 600 undergraduate students, 150 MS students and 29 PhD students are enrolled in the department. The department has produced more than 1000 MS graduates, 71 PhDs and thousands of undergraduate students since its establishment. The graduated students from Department of Physics, CUI Lahore are not only successful professionals but many of them have bagged scholarship opportunities at national and international level. It is due to all the above-mentioned reasons that the Department of Physics, CUI Islamabad has stood triumphant due to its firm achievements and solidified its reputation as a well-established and leading platform to promote physics at the national level.
