Admissions in graduate programs are offered on merit at CUI. The merit is determined on the basis of the academic record, GRE/NTS-GAT score and test/interview.

General Eligibility Criteria

MS Programs

  • A 16 years degree in the relevant field from an accredited educational institution, with minimum First division (annual system) or CGPA 2.5/4.0 (semester system) and no third division (annual system) or 'D' grade (semester system) throughout the academic career.
  • NTS GAT with minimum score of 50.

PhD Program

  • A MS/M.Phil degree with Thesis of 06 credit hours or its equivalent degree with Thesis of 06 credit hours, in the relevant field from an accredited educational institution, with minimum CGPA of 3.0/4.0 (semester system) or 70% marks (annual system), and no third division (annual system) or 'D' grade (semester system) throughout the academic career.
  • GRE (subject) as per HEC policy or NTS GAT with minimum score of 60.

MS Admission Test

The MS admission test judges the background in fourmajor areas of physics,that is Quantum Mechanics, Newtonian Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism and Thermodynamics, at the undergraduate level. A Good background in calculus and ordinary differential equations is necessary.

In the following, a concise syllabus along with the references is outlined. The references are suggestive so any other textbook covering these topics can be consulted.

  • Quantum Mechanics:Wavefunctions, Interpretation and properties. Free particle Wavefunction. Uncertainty principle.The solution of time independent Schrodinger equation for one-dimensional model potentials like infinite/finite well and harmonic oscillator. State vectors and operators. Time evolution of the state vectors. Spin angular momentum.

  • Mechanics:Newton’s Laws. One and two dimensional Motion under gravity. Work and Energy, Conservation laws.Circular motion and Angular momentum. Gravitation and orbits. Periodic motion and harmonic oscillations.

  • Electricity and Magnetism: Coulomb’s law, Electric field and Potential due to discrete and continuous charge distribution, Magnetic fields in free space, Ampere’s and Faraday’s Law, Gauss Law of magnetic field, Induced magnetic fields. Electric and Magnetic Dipoles.Maxwell's equations.

  • Heat and Thermodynamics: Temperature, Heat and Work. Laws of thermodynamics, Ideal gas equation of state, kinetic theory of ideal gas. Thermodynamic processes like isothermal and adiabatic compression. Probability and Entropy. Boltzmann factor and the canonical partition function
