The Department of Meteorology is home of multidisciplinary fields and offer services to specialists of varying backgrounds ranging from Meteorology, Remote Sensing, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Geography and Geodesy and Geographical Information System. The Department, established in 2005, is actively engaged in research and teaching activities. Apart from research and teaching the department frequently conducts seminars, workshops and organizes national and international conferences. The Department has developed national and international linkages with many well-known and established institutions such as;

2. International Centre for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), China
3. The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy
4. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Islamabad
5. Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad and SUPARCO

This Department has the unique place at national level as being the only Department in the country offering MS and PhD degrees in Meteorology. The department is receiving an enhanced number of student’s intake during recent years because of importance of this field and its application in various sub fields. The state institutions running under Ministry of Defense like Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) are sending their employees for getting higher education and till to date many officers have graduated from the Department of Meteorology. NGO’s and other government departments having requirement of weather forecasting, hydrological resource prediction researches and other societal stakeholders related to climate change science are collaborating with Department of Meteorology in order to get an opportunity of acquiring knowledge and skills for their personal as well as a platform for carrying out primary research in this rapidly growing field.
The future priorities of this department would focus on innovation and currency of knowledge with sustainable development and applied paradigms pertinent to South Asian Monsoon dynamics, extreme climatic events and their forecasting and mitigation measures, changes in land use, hydrological resources modeling and evaluation, climatic variability and its impact and to provide windows for advance research in atmospheric complexities and soil loss and reclamation and pollution of atmosphere and water.
The department is well equipped with laboratory resources for conducting research. These include small cluster lab to run the simulations in climatic studies, meteorological instruments like Ceilometers, Automated Lightening Alert and Risk Management System (ALARM), visibility sensors and softwares for RS & GIS studies. The faculty of the department welcomes graduate students interested in carrying out research in these fields.
