Program Overview

The PhD program in Remote Sensing and GIS is an advanced, research-oriented degree designed to cultivate experts in geospatial science. It delves into cutting-edge methodologies in remote sensing, geographic information systems, spatial analysis, and geospatial data science. Students conduct original research to push the boundaries of geospatial knowledge, addressing pressing global issues like climate change, urbanization, and disaster management. The program also emphasizes technical skills such as geospatial programming and machine learning. Graduates are prepared to lead in academia, government, or industry, shaping the future of geospatial technologies and their applications.

Program Objectives

  1. To advance practical application for scientific knowledge in photogrammetry, GIS, and RS at an advanced level.
  2. To provide advanced education and training for students in utilizing RS, GIS, database technology, spatial/temporal modeling, and software development principles within the context of advanced research in Earth sciences, environmental sciences, soil sciences, hydrology, and atmospheric science.
  3. To empower students to innovate and develop cutting-edge solutions to complex and emerging challenges in environmental monitoring and earth resource analysis.
  4. To instill an advanced understanding of geospatial science techniques among students, with a particular focus on advanced application fields such as land governance, environmental management, disaster management, natural resources management, and urban and regional planning.
  5. To equip students with the expertise to contribute significantly to areas such as geofencing of emerging diseases, health risk analysis, topographical change detection, population spread trend analysis, live traffic control and management, forest management, flood monitoring, surface water/resource management, land subsidence in coastal areas, and coastal erosion, at an advanced level.
  6. To foster contributions to advanced research endeavors, including glacial monitoring, analysis of tectonic uplifts and subduction zones, oceanographic monitoring, cattle monitoring in open fields, and the updating of geographic and geologic/topographic maps of Pakistan, at a doctoral level.

Entry Requirements

An MS/M.Phil. degree with thesis of 06 credit hours or its equivalent degree with thesis of 06 credit hours, in the relevant field from an accredited educational institute, with minimum CGPA of 3.0/4.0 (semester system) or 70% marks (annual system), and no third division (annual system) or ā€˜Dā€™ grade (semester system) throughout the academic career. GRE (Subject) as per HEC policy or minimum score of 60 in NTS GAT Subject.

In the industry, graduates may hold positions such as Geospatial Data Scientist, GIS Architect, or Remote Sensing Analyst in sectors including environmental consultancy, transportation, urban planning, defense, and energy. They may also influence policy as advisors on geospatial matters in governmental agencies.
