SYNESTHESIA: A Colorful World

All humans are different. This is something we already know, but one of the first things we ever learn is that all humans have 5 senses: sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste. Usually, when we receive stimulus, it is only received by the corresponding sense.

However, for some humans, life is a very different, rich, and multi-sensory experience. The human mind is so complex, that when some individuals receive information meant to simulate one receptor, another one or several more of their receptors are also stimulated along with that instead. This is a neurological phenomenon known as SYNESTHESIA.

Synesthesia is when an individual’s senses blend together. This results in seeing color upon hearing sound, tasting something upon hearing certain words, seeing letters and numbers in color, and quite a few other fascinating combinations of the senses.

Synesthesia is very unknown condition, even though 4% - 6% of the world is said to have it. The purpose of my thesis is to educate people on this intriguing condition that is mostly considered positive. It is to raise awareness on the topic itself, and to help visualize and feel what a synesthete actually sees and feels in their daily life.
