Why this is relevant to CUI faculty

The scheme supports mid-career researchers worldwide (including those based in low- and middle-income countries) to lead their own substantial, innovative research programmes in a wide range of disciplines related to health, life and wellbeing.

Funding typically covers both research expenses and, under certain eligibility conditions, salary (especially relevant for researchers based in low- and middle-income countries).

The award duration can extend up to eight years, giving ample time for development and execution of a major research agenda.
Encouragement for Pakistani Researchers:
As per publicly available records, researchers from Pakistan have previously succeeded in obtaining grants from Wellcome, including at least three researchers affiliated with Karachi-based universities in 2013 and 2017. This demonstrates that Pakistani academics are competitive under this scheme, which should give confidence to CUI faculty considering applying.
Given this precedent, we believe many of our accomplished mid-career colleagues at CUI may be well-positioned to apply, especially those who have completed substantive research periods after their PhD, and are ready to propose an independent and innovative research programme.
