CUI & ICGEB Set the Stage for Global Science Partnership

Islamabad, November 18, 2025 – CUI hosted a meeting with Prof. Dr. Silvano Piazza of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Trieste, on 18 November 2025 here at Islamabad Campus—an interaction that blended science, vision, and the promise of powerful cross-continental collaboration.

The afternoon opened with a warm welcome by Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head of CUI’s International Office in the presence of Dr. Waseem Haider, Associate Professor (Bioinformatics), Department of Biosciences, CUI Islamabad Campus. Dr. Omer delivered a compelling snapshot of CUI’s rising global footprint—its research momentum, internationalization, and expanding presence across Europe through Erasmus partnerships. His briefing highlighted CUI’s long-standing synergy with ICGEB, from joint workshops to participation in high-value research calls.

What followed was a spirited exchange of ideas aimed at shaping a CUI–ICGEB collaboration model. Dr. Omer proposed linking research groups, co-hosting scientific events, and deepening researcher mobility. Erasmus exchanges and strategic research networking were spotlighted as core accelerators of this new partnership.

Prof. Piazza was evidently impressed about the briefing on CUI and briefed about Trieste’s iconic science ecosystem—a remarkable constellation featuring organizations like ICTP, SISSA, Elettra Synchrotron all present at Trieste’s dynamic Area Science Park. The high-tech industries in the park play a vital role in transforming research into practical applications and fostering innovation. These industries support technology transfer, commercialization of research findings, and development of prototypes and products, while providing training and collaborative opportunities for highly skilled personnel. He underscored how its biotechnology and high-tech industries connect with frontier research, offering extraordinary avenues for innovation, technology transfer, and prototype development. He offered to link CUI with ICGEB’s External Relations Office, opening doors to industry and international scientific circuits and connecting CUI with the industries in the Area Science Park.

The conversation expanded to potential ties with the University of Trieste, collaborative conferences via COMSTECH, and structured leadership-level engagements between CUI and ICGEB. Prof. Piazza signaled readiness to move toward a formal MoU, ensuring continuity and momentum.

The meeting concluded with exchange of souvenirs and a shared conviction
