Description:  

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) is a summer internship in Japan for international students who have their majors in subjects relevant to natural science. Students who will take part in the UTRIP?summer internship program?will be working on research-based projects so they will have a better understanding of all the research work conducted during graduate study. Students participating in this summer internship program will work under the mentorship of renowned researchers of the Graduate School of Science (GSS) at UTokyo who will assist them in polishing their research-related capabilities. 

 

Course Level:   Summer Internship 

 

Grants: A fully funded program that includes no application fees 

  • Includes free accommodation and meals 

  • A stipend will be awarded to all participants except those who receive the FUTI Award. 

  • The program includes detailed research projects. 

  • A trip to cultural sites of Japan 

  • A comprehensive Japanese language course 

  • A certificate of completion 

 

Eligibility criteria: Must have completed at least one full year of a bachelor’s degree program by the time of application. 

  • Must be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program (or an equivalent year of an integrated bachelor’s-master’s program) at a university outside Japan and plan to return to their home institution after the internship. 

  • Must be majoring in natural sciences or a related field. 

  • Should have a strong interest in pursuing a long-term career in science. 

  • Must be able to participate full-time for the entire six-week duration of the UTRIP program. 

  • Must provide proof of health insurance coverage effective during the internship period before arriving in Japan. 

  • If English is not the first language, must submit TOEFL or equivalent English proficiency test scores. Continuous English-medium education for the past eight years exempts students from this requirement. 

 

How to apply: Select up to two research projects from the available list that interest you. 

  • Prepare all required documents. 

  • Complete the online application form and upload the necessary files. 

  • Submit all materials through the online system by the deadline. 

  • Arrange for a recommendation letter to be submitted online by the recommender by the specified deadline. 

  • Wait for the selection results, which will be announced on the UTRIP website and sent via email. 

Required Documents for Japan Summer Internship: 

  • A personal statement (700-1000 words) explaining your research interests, qualifications, and future academic plans. 

  • Resume or CV with details of your educational background and relevant experience. 

  • Official academic transcript. 

  • English proficiency test scores (if applicable). 

  • Recommendation letter from a professor or academic advisor, submitted online by the recommender.
