CUI Explores Collaborative Prospects with Chamber of Commerce and Industry Paris, France

The International Office, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) took another significant step towards internationalization by holding an online meeting with Mr. Si Ali Assous, Head of International Development, Chamber of Commerce and Industry Paris France (CCI Paris France) on February 12, 2025. The purpose of the meeting was to rejuvenate the partnership with CCI Paris and to explore new collaborative opportunities.

Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head International Office, CUI commenced the dialogue by highlighting the university's achievements and its active engagement with the French Embassy. He expressed a keen interest in renewing ties with CCI Paris and proposed semester exchange programs for CUI students, akin to existing agreements with institutions like Ajman University in the UAE and Middle East Technical University in Turkey. In response, Mr. Si Ali Assous, welcomed the initiative and requested a draft document of understanding for further evaluation.

Mr. Assous detailed two primary avenues for collaboration:

  1. A consortium of five premier French business schools offering master's programs in management sciences, enabling CUI students to apply to all five institutions through a single application and fee.
  2. An additional network of fourteen affiliated schools specializing in diverse fields such as business, engineering, culinary arts and more

Ms. Samira Shah, Senior Program Officer and Incharge of the French Desk at IO, recounted previous joint initiatives, including webinars conducted between 2018 and 2019 with CCI Paris. She proposed reigniting the partnership by organizing informational seminars for CUI's students and faculty. Ms. Ayesha Masood inquired about French language courses, to which Mr. Assous suggested exploring the "French for Business" program.

A notable proposition from CCI Paris was the establishment of an interview center at CUI. This facility would streamline the interview process for students accepted into the top five business schools.

Both institutions expressed enthusiasm for revitalizing their partnership, with plans to finalize collaboration details in forthcoming discussions.

Student Exchange Program Agreement Signing Ceremony Between COMSATS University Islamabad and University of Regina, Canada, and Symposium on Experiential Learning in Higher Education

Islamabad, February 18, 2025: The Student Exchange Program Agreement (SEPA) Signing Ceremony between CUI and the University of Regina (U of R), Canada, along with a Symposium on Experiential Learning in Higher Education, was held on February 18, 2025, at Islamabad Campus. The event brought together faculty members, students along with the International Office team, while virtual participants included the Acting Consul General of Pakistan in Vancouver, Directors of CUI Campuses, focal persons of the International Office, and Canadian alumni from various CUI campuses. Dr. Jeff Keshen, President and Vice-Chancellor, U of R and Mr. Haroon Chaudhry, Associate Vice-President (International), Chief International Officer & U of R Focal Person participated physically who travelled all the way from Canada to Pakistan for one of this purpose.

Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head International Office and CUI Focal Person U of R, delivered the welcome remarks and an overview of the University. He highlighted that the engagements between CUI and U of R, are built on a shared commitment to academic excellence and international collaboration. He highlighted that the MoU, signed on February 23, 2024, with due approval from the Government of Pakistan, serves as a milestone in strengthening institutional ties and provides a strategic foundation for future joint initiatives. He elaborated on the SEPA, designed to foster global education and mutual understanding. Key features of SEPA include a five-year renewable term, an annual exchange quota of three undergraduate students with flexible balancing, eligibility criteria requiring students to have completed one year (CUI) or 30 credit hours (U of R) of undergraduate study, and a nomination process where the host institution retains final admission authority. Additionally, students will remain enrolled in their home institutions, with tuition paid there while being exempt from tuition fees at the host institution.

He also highlighted the success of CUI’s collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and North Dakota State University (NDSU), where 45 and 29 CUI scholars, respectively, completed their PhDs and now serve as faculty members at CUI. Dr. Omer proposed similar arrangements with U of R and outlined potential collaboration opportunities, including scientific and research partnerships, faculty exchange programs, engagement with Canadian funding agencies, participation in each other’s academic events, and faculty visits under the fully funded HEC Faculty Exchange Program.

Following this, Mr. Haroon Chaudhry, Associate Vice-President (International), Chief International Officer, and U of R Focal Person, presented an overview of the University of Regina and spoke on "Institutional Engagement of the University of Regina in Pakistan." He encouraged CUI students to participate in Mitacs Globalink Research Internships at U of R. A keynote speech on "Experiential Learning in Higher Education" was delivered by Dr. Jeff Keshen, President and Vice-Chancellor of U of R, followed by a Q&A session where Canadian alumni, faculty, and students actively engaged in discussions. Dr. Tahir Ali Akbar, a Canadian alumnus at CUI, proposed strong collaborations in civil engineering, environmental engineering, faculty exchange programs, and remote sensing and earth sciences, while Dr. Waseem Haider, Tenured Associate Professor at Biosciences Department of Islamabad Campus of the University discussed about the potential collaborations in liberal arts.

The formal signing of the SEPA took place, with Dr. Tahir Naeem, Director P&D/HRD of CUI, signing on behalf of the Rector of CUI, and Dr. Jeff Keshen signing on behalf of U of R. His Excellency Mr. Ghulam Hussain, Acting Consul General of Pakistan in Vancouver, joined virtually and emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties between Canada and Pakistan. He expressed confidence that the agreement would pave the way for joint research initiatives, faculty exchanges, and student mobility programs, assuring full support from the Consulate General of Pakistan for this collaboration.

In his closing remarks on behalf of the Rector of CUI, Dr. Tahir Naeem underscored the significance of academic partnerships, highlighting the insights shared during the event. He reiterated that SEPA reinforces the commitment of both institutions to global education, cross-cultural academic exchanges, and enriching student learning experiences. He extended appreciation to the distinguished delegates from U of R, the Acting Consul General of Pakistan, CUI faculty and officials, and the International Office for their dedication in ensuring the success of this initiative. He further elaborated on the role of the Directorate of Planning, Development, and HRD, which has been instrumental in CUI’s growth and evolution. He highlighted the contributions of the Directorate, the implementation of development projects, and the university’s robust Human Resource Development (HRD) Program, which is one of the largest among Pakistani universities.

Dr. Naeem outlined proposals for collaboration, including a split-site PhD program, joint research initiatives in STEM fields, student and graduate training programs for employability, commercialization of research projects, joint conferences, and enhanced faculty and student linkages. He also emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people contacts and leveraging international partnerships for academic and research excellence.

COMSATS University Islamabad and CERN to Strengthen, Expand Collaboration

Islamabad, June 25, 2024 – COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) hosted a two-member delegation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) at its Islamabad Campus on June 25, 2024. The delegates comprised Dr. Luciano Musa, Project Leader ALICE, (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) CERN, alongside Dr. Luca Malgeri, Senior Researcher. They were also joined by Dr. Zafar Yasin, Director CERN Secretariat, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and Dr. Altaf Ur Rahman, Director, CERN, Switzerland.

It was informed that since joining ALICE in 2008 and achieving full membership in 2012, COMSATS University Islamabad has been integral to advancing scientific research in collaboration with CERN. To revive and expand this partnership, the university leadership recently formed a specialized CERN Liaison Group. Heading this initiative Dr. Tahir Naeem, Director Planning, Development, and Human Resource Development (P, D and HRD), CUI was designated as Focal Person to manage all collaborative efforts and future programs with CERN.

Dr. Hammad Omer, Head, CUI International Office, Professor Dr. Muhammad Anis-ur-Rehman, Head Department of Physics, CUI, Dr. Uzma Tabassam, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, and Rubina Bhatti, Additional Director (P, D and HRD) were part of the CUI CERN Liaison Group.

The discussants focused on expanding collaboration across CUI's seven campuses, embracing various disciplines beyond Physics, while exploring diverse avenues, like faculty fellowships, research partnerships, and financial support for visiting students, joint projects, and PhD supervision as well as plans for interdisciplinary collaborations.

The CERN officials expressed strong endorsement for CUI's proposed initiatives and broadening collaborative efforts.

COMSATS University Islamabad to explore collaborations

with Syrian Universities

Islamabad, May 6, 2024 – A delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Ministry of Education of the Syrian Arab Republic visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on May 6, 2024.

Dr. Rami Waheed Al-Dhulli, Syrian Deputy Minister of Education and Educational Affairs, and Ramez Alraee, Syrian Ambassador to Pakistan led the Syrian delegation. Delegates from the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research included Dr. Manal Sulaiman Saqr, IT Director; Mr. Yaseer Saeed Khadra, Director of Scientific Research; Dr. Aqil Saeed Mahfoud, Director of International Cooperation. While delegates from the Syrian Ministry of Education included Najeeb Suhail Salaq, Director (IT), as well as Mr. Ragib Ali Al-Jidi, Education Director. Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Samin, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training and Mr. Zain Ul Abedin, Joint Scientific Advisor, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, were also present.

Rector CUI, Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar extended a warm welcome to the delegates on behalf of COMSATS University, along with his team members.

Head CUI International Office, Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., presented detailed achievements and milestones of COMSATS University. He informed that so far, 11 Syrian students have studied at CUI. The potential collaborative opportunities proposed included, academic exchange programs, faculty development, cultural exchange, Technology and ICT education in Hybrid mode, and collaboration for innovation and research.

The delegates expressed their keen interest in seeking collaboration opportunities with COMSATS University in multiple domains related to virtual learning, teaching mechanisms, scientific skills, and skills proficiency of students and teachers in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), technology-based educational initiatives, and exploring avenues for bilateral scientific and cultural cooperation. The delegates also expressed interest in CUI’s assistance in improving the rankings of Syrian universities. The delegates informed that in the year 2000, a Syrian–COMSATS–COMSTECH Information Technology Centre (SCCITC) was established having the patronage of the Presidents of both countries. However, in the after math of the conflict in Syria and subsequent earthquake the project suffered immensely. The delegates expressed interest in reviving the SCCITC and improving its outlook.

Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar assured immediate provision of trainings after the completion of codal formalities. He said that CUI will offer generous post-graduate scholarships to promising students from Syria.

COMSATS University Islamabad and University of Regina of Canada Forge Historic Global Collaboration

Islamabad, February 23, 2024 – In a significant step towards global cooperation, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) and University of Regina, Canada, have sealed a landmark MoU for a five-year term, already endorsed by the Government of Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Sajjad A. Madani, Registrar of CUI, and Mr. Haroon Chaudhary, Associate Vice-President (International) & Chief International Officer of the University of Regina, inked the MoU on behalf of their institutions during a physical ceremonious event held at the CUI Campus on February 23, 2024.

The occasion was honoured by the presence of Mr. Michael Lazaruk, Head of the Commercial Program & Senior Trade Commissioner of the High commission of Canada in Islamabad. H.E. Mr. Janbaz Khan, Consul General of Pakistan, and Mr. Ghulam Hussain, Vice Consul General, joined the ceremony virtually from Vancouver, Canada.  Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head, International Office, presented an overview of COMSATS University Islamabad and highlighted past engagements of the university with Canada established since 2004 and proposed further connections between CUI and Canada.

Under the terms of the MoU, both universities intend to amplify their collaboration efforts, fostering direct contacts, educational advancements, and research partnerships between their constituents, including student, faculty, departments, and research institutes. This alliance is also poised to catalyse collaborative science and technology research projects, facilitate publications, and spearhead capacity building programs for the collective advancement of both universities.
