Manchester Metropolitan University Explores Academic
and Research Collaborations with CUI
Islamabad, February 13, 2025 – COMSATS University Islamabad had the distinct honour of welcoming Dr. Nessar Ahmed, Reader in Clinical Biochemistry at the Department of Life Sciences, and Ms. Susan Kearvell, International Recruitment, Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), UK, on February 13, 2025.
Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head International Office, and Dr. Waseem Haider, Associate Professor (Bioinformatics), alongside UK alumni from CUI’s Biosciences Department, engaged with the delegates to explore avenues for academic and research collaborations. The discussions focused on establishing strategic research partnerships, faculty and student exchange programs, and joint academic initiatives. Dr. Omer provided a comprehensive overview of CUI, its research strengths, and global academic outlook, followed by Dr. Ahmed’s introduction to MMU’s institutional framework, scholarship opportunities for CUI students for postgraduate studies at MMU. The MMU representatives proposed faculty research collaborations, including joint supervision of PhD studentships, Royal Society international exchanges, Biochemical Society lab visit grants, and MSCA postdoctoral fellowships.
A key highlight of the visit was an exclusive session for the students of the Biosciences Department at Islamabad Campus by Dr. Ahmed, titled “Biomedical Science Education and Research: Opportunities at MMU.” This interactive session provided an in-depth roadmap for aspiring scholars, detailing application pathways for Master’s and PhD programs, eligibility criteria, scholarship prospects, and collaborative research avenues. Students gained valuable insights into MMU’s research-driven Department of Life Sciences, its postgraduate offerings—including the 12-month MSc in Biosciences—and the vibrant academic and research ecosystem in Manchester. Engaging directly with students, particularly from BS Biosciences, Dr. Ahmed elaborated on academic life in the UK, research engagement, and funding opportunities. He particularly highlighted Departmental Research Themes, including Lifelong Health & Active Ageing, Cardiovascular Science, Neurodegeneration, Musculoskeletal Function in Health & Ageing, and Microbiology. He provided detailed information on entry requirements and the application process for postgraduate study as an international student. MMU scholarships were categorized into general scholarships, Vice Chancellor’s scholarships, PhD studentships, as well as international scholarships such as Chevening Scholarships, Commonwealth Scholarships, and British Council Scholarships. Dr. Omer encouraged students to capitalize on the opportunities presented by Dr. Ahmed and leverage them for academic and professional growth.
The visit underscored a shared vision for advancing high-impact research collaborations, faculty and student mobility, and institutional synergies between the two institutions. Concluding on a forward-looking note, the engagement reaffirmed a mutual commitment to pioneering scientific research and fostering meaningful academic partnerships. This visit stands as a testament to CUI’s dedication to global academic integration, excellence in higher education, and leadership in international collaborations.
