Seminar on “Recent Heatwave in Pakistan”, organized by Geospatial Science Society of Department of Meteorology on 19th May 2022
Dr. Rehan Ahmed, Assistant Professor and administrator of the Climate Change and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) group, Department of Meteorology, CUI, delivered a seminar on “Recent Heatwave in Pakistan”, which was organized by Geospatial Science Society of the Department of Meteorology on 19th May 2022 at Seminar Hall of Business Incubation Center (BIC), COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Islamabad, Pakistan. The speaker worked as a forecasting officer in the National Weather Forecasting Center of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) for several years.
He talked about the concept and importance of atmospheric conditions that are termed as a heatwave in various parts of the world. He explained global and local possible causes of existing heatwave conditions in different parts of the country. Pakistan is one of those countries which are prone to changing climate impacts. Seasonal shifts and increase in frequency of extreme weather events are already known impacts of climate change in several regions of the globe. Recent high temperatures in the country are abnormal for this month and fulfill criterion for defining a heatwave in this part of the world. He explained scientific and technical aspects of heat wave to increase public awareness. He also highlighted importance of research dimensions in atmospheric science and climate change. Observed increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves in Pakistan needs to be established scientifically and its possible impacts need to be focused on by policy makers.
