COMSATS University hosted Ajman University delegation and discussed diverse avenues to synergize collaboration

Islamabad, Friday, July 1, 2022: COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) hosted a two-member senior-level delegation from Ajman University (AU), UAE on July 1, 2022. AU delegation comprised of Prof. Khaled Assaleh, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Prof. Dr. Kamran Arshad, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research.

Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, Head International Office of CUI welcomed the delegates and showed them campus facilities. The formal meeting was held in Rector Office. Worthy Rector CUI welcomed the guests and introduced his team to them comprised of Prof. Dr. Sajjad A. Madani, Registrar, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abid, Director, CUI Wah Campus, Prof. Dr. Shahzad A. Malik, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Saqib Gulzar, Dean, Faculty of Business Administration and Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, Head International Office. From CUI Lahore Campus, Prof. Dr. Sobia Baig, Head, Energy Research Centre (ERC), Dr. Fawad Azeem, Assistant Professor, ERC, and Dr. Ghulam Murtaza, Head Pharmacy Department participated online.

Prof. Assaleh thanked worthy Rector for accepting AU’s wish to visit CUI and presented an overview of AU. He briefed that the main purpose of their visit was to strengthen the relationship with CUI. He deliberated on collaborative models like faculty and student mobility exchange schemes, research collaborations, joint publications and visiting scholar programs. Worthy Rector appreciated AU’s objective and discussed diverse avenues to synergize collaboration between both universities.

Dr. Arshad, a Pakistani-origin at UAE, had been actively pursuing with CUI for establishing academic and research collaboration between AU and CUI for the last three years. With this determination, Prof. Arshad persuaded AU delegation to visit CUI. Currently, quite a good number of activities and engagements between CUI with AU are being taking place with the efforts of Dr. Arshad. Dr. Arshad briefed that AU has six state-of-the-art research centers which cover key areas of national and international strategic importance. He suggested the best way forward for collaboration between the two universities could be deans-level interaction and research center to research center interaction to identify areas of research collaboration. In addition, the first scenario of mobility of graduate students could be spending one semester and the second scenario could be that graduate students to visit AU for few days and vice versa.

Prof. Dr. Sajjad A. Madani, Registrar CUI gave a detailed presentation of CUI which covered background, campus wise faculty and student strength, international rankings and international students, administrative structure and achievements. Dr. Madani briefed the delegation that CUI is one of the partner universities of National Center of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI). Under this NCAI, a Medical Imaging and Diagnostics Lab has already been established at the Department of Computer Science in Islamabad Campus. He suggested interaction of NCAI Lab with AU and vice versa for future collaboration purpose.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abid, Director, CUI Wah Campus was assigned as Focal Person for establishing research collaboration between research centers of both universities, including pharmacy and artificial intelligence. The visit was concluded with exchange of university shields and an invitation by Prof. Assaleh to Prof. Afzal and his team to visit AU.
