Panel Discussion on Climate Change at Comsats University Islamabad- Courtesy French Embassy (January 30, 2020)

On January 30, 2020 the International Office of Comsats University Islamabad (CUI) in collaboration with the French Embassy in Islamabad and Department of Meteorology, CUI held a riveting panel discussion on the 2020 theme “Being Alive” as a part of its main event “The Night of Ideas”. A panel of seven, included heads and experts from various governmental and private organizations. His Excellency the Ambassador of France to Pakistan Dr. Marc Bre’ty was invited as the guest of honor. People from various walks of life participated in the event.

The program was opened by a welcome note from Dr. Imran Shehzad, HoD Meteorology Department, followed by the thoughts of the French Ambassador on organizing this event on a pressing global challenge faced by all alike. Mr. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, an expert on climate change and development moderated the discussion between the panelists and profoundly thanked the French Embassy for organizing the discussion and CUI for hosting it.

The experts interpreted and debated on the theme, “Being Alive” from their individual perspectives within their areas of work. The diversified views of the professionals converged into some concrete suggested actions that are immediately required to be taken and implemented at personal, organizational, national and international levels. There was a consensus of opinion that it is a developmental issue and there has to be awareness and community involvement at a massive scale, climate change discussions and measures to be made part of our routine conversations, protective measures to be introduced and put into practice right from our homes, there is a clear need for more effective communication, connection and unity, all stakeholders must be made part of climate protection campaigns, a culture of conservation has to be re-introduced, change has to be embraced more collectively by using the power of art and media in order to mobilize the policy makers.

After an interactive participation and input from the audience the event was wrapped up by the Head International Office with a vote of thanks to His Excellency, the French Embassy the esteemed panelists, the moderator, the Department of Meteorology, the International office team and the IEEE student society members who together made the evening a huge success.
