Water conservation activities in Nigeria: Capacity building on knowledge, awareness, and attitude change (By Prof. Kenneth Yongabi, Imo State University, Owerri, Nigeria):

The research group at Imo State University, Nigeria has embarked on an aggressive campaign to conserve water through meticulous and judicious use of this very finite resource. A general observational study across Nigeria suggests that water conservation is not well entrenched in the daily lives of the citizens. They have embarked upon educating people on the need for water conservation especially careful and appropriate use of this resource. To this effect, they started with schools especially primary and secondary schools in a bid to grow the knowledge and build attitude change suis generis.

The selected schools were:

  • Community Primary School, Ogada Ighetti, Owerri North, Imo State, Nigeria
  • Uratta Secondary School, Owerri North, Imo State, Nigeria.

These schools are in the village setting and do not have proper water and sanitation facilities. They visited the schools and began schooling the pupils and students on the need to conserve water. A general assessment of their knowledge on water conservation was initiated before the training. It was observed that they were not aware of any need for water conservation and agreed to the fact that clean water is scarce.

The team demonstrated how water should be used for laundry services, bathing, and other chores without wastage. They demonstrated how the tap should be opened and closed when not in use. Similarly, demonstrated how water should be used or watering of crops in a garden without wastage.
