In continuation of the first successful visit and a talksession of the Iranian Ambassador H.E Mr. Mehdi Honardoost at CIIT, on 15th December,2016, H.E along with 3 other delegation members namely,Prof. Saeed Sarkar, the Secretary General of Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council(INIC), Prof. Ali Baitollahi, the Director of international Collaboration & Nano Standardization Committees (INIC)and Dr. M.A Naji Rad, Research Councellor Emmbassy of I.R of Iran;came to visit the active research labs of CIIT. The delegation was cordially welcomed by Dr. Malik Head (IO), Dr. Altaf Karim, HOD Physics and other IO officials. The delegates were first lead to the Nanotechnology Research Labs, where Dr. Shahid explained the research work being actively carried out by the researchers and students. Prof. Saeed Sarkar and Dr. Ali Baitollahi took great interest in the briefing and discussed various forms of research done in Nanotechnology.
The Iranian guests were next ushered to the Research Labs of the Physics department which included Cold Plasma Lab, Applied Thermal Physics Lab, Radiation Lab and Laser Lab. A detailed account of research being done was given, focusing on different materials and energy efficient devices being studied for energy generation which include Nano Fiber Composites, Thermo Electric and Semi Conducting Materials, Ferrites etc. Special interest was shown by Dr. Sarkar in indigenously designed electro spinning unit. In the Radiation Lab,different instruments, detectors and sources used for radiation measurement were also shown. It was elaborated that the future goal of the lab is to extend its experiments for developing a map of Pakistan which can identify places that are more radioactive and dangerous for living and construction.
The IO officials thenaccompanied the dignitaries tothe Biosciences department where Dr. Tayyaba Yasmin their Head, welcomed the guests with a bouquet of flowers. The Iranian visitors were briefed about the nature of active research taking place in the Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology (BMBB), Bioinformatics and Cancer Genetics Labs. The Iranian Professors asked various questions which were addressed by our experts. Some specific areas that were discussed included food nanotechnology, prospects of agricultural biotechnology and cancer genetics research. Dr. Sarkar explained aboutthe research done in Iran for development of Nano biosciences to detect certain types of cancers at an early stage.
After the visit of Biosciences labs, the delegates were warmly received by the Head and the Associate Head of the CS department. The visitorswere first shown the ComSens Research Lab where H.E the Ambassador of Iran addressed the students and senior faculty members present, stressing the need to establish strong educational connections between the two countries. After that, Dr. Malik, Head IO elaborated about the quality education and expansion of CIIT across seven campuses in Pakistan. A detailed presentation was given by Dr. Majid Iqbal, Head CS department, about the accomplishments and research contributions of his department. The In charge ComSens Lab briefed the delegation members about the research achievements of the lab. Prof. Saeed Sarkar being the Head of Iran Nanotechnology Council addressed the audience in detail about the wide scope of nanotechnology as it encompasses all aspects of life technologies and the future of using smart nanotechnology in everything. He said it is the need of the hour thatMuslim countries must hold hands and work together to become independent and achieve the common objectives of peace, economic development and endurance. During his talk, he also highlighted the remarkable progress made by Iran in Nanotechnology and how their Nano based products are being exported to many parts of the world. He further emphasized that the top universities of both the countries mustcollaborate to take benefitfrom each other’s expertise.A quick visit to the ASERG lab was also conducted for the delegation where a detailed demonstration of the T-Eye Threat Intelligence Platform was given by the In charge ASERG Lab who also explained how CIIT is working together with the industry to find solutions for ever increasingcybersecurity challenges.
The respected guests were then treated for a lunch hosted for them in the faculty cafeteria, where signing of an Intent of Cooperation with CIIT also came under discussion. CIIT was also invited to participate in an International Conference hosted by Iran to be held in November, 2017. Dr. Rad the Research Counsellor at the Iranian Embassy suggested that faculty and student exchange programs should be started as well.
The souvenirs were exchanged from both sides followed by a group photo. H. E and other delegates were very thankful, satisfied and appreciative for a well-arranged and insightful visit and left with a hope to commence the Pakistan- Iran University and industry partnership process soon.
