COMBITS 2015


COMBITS is an event of Department of Computer Science CIIT Attock campus held annually since 2012. Keeping in view the response and enthusiasm of the students the department decided to arrange COMBits 2015 on a bigger scale. Sister campuses of CIIT as well as universities of Peshawar and Islamabad region were invited to attend COMBits 2015 which was held on 4th and 5th December. Following activities were part of this year’s COMBits:-

The response of the universities/institutes was overwhelming and about 160+ participants of following universities/institutes took part in the above mentioned events:-

IM Sciences
CECOS University
Iqra National University
Opening ceremony of the event was held on 4th December, 2015 at 0930 hrs. The ceremony was attended by all the participants, faculty and students of CIIT Attock. Dr. Farzand Ali Jan (Chairman, Mgt. Sc. Department) CIIT was chief guest on the occasion. In his speech Dr. Farzand congratulated the department of CS for arranging the event. He welcomed all the participants and encouraged the participants to take part and show sportsman spirit throughout the event. Refreshments were served at the end of the opening ceremony.
After the opening ceremony the event started formally. Xtreme programming was the first event where 36 participants in a team of 3 students each took part in the event. These students were given 6 set of tasks to be completed in 4 hours. An independent panel of judges evaluated the code developed by the students and as per their decision students of CIIT Lahore won this event.
Brain Busters challenge (Quiz competition) was the second event of the day. An application was developed exclusively for this event by the faculty members of the department. 18 teams took part in the first round. After first round 6 Teams were selected for the second round and 3 teams qualified for the final round scheduled for the second day.
Software Project Competition was arranged to give a platform to students of participating universities to showcase their projects. In the competition 12 projects of 8 universities/departments were presented. A panel of judges evaluated the projects. The judges declared “Currency Note Recognizer” a project of students of NUML University as the best project.
First round of Gam-Ectro (E-gaming) was also scheduled on the first day. In a competitively contested environment about 100 students took the challenge in three computer games i.e. Need for Speed, FIFA and Counter Strike. 6 students each qualified for final round of FIFA and Need for Speed, whereas 6 teams were selected for the final round of Counter Strike. Final rounds of the gaming event were scheduled for the second day.
The idea of Ad making event was to evaluate participants’ creative skills. It was a team event where each team was asked to prepare a short advertisement of 1 min duration on a given theme. Students were briefed about the theme and rules and regulations of the event on the first day. 6 teams took part in the event who were asked to prepare the advertisement and present to panel of judges on the second day.
First day’s activities which started at 10:00 am ran till 5:00 pm with only one lunch break during this time. At the end of activities to freshen up the participants a grand movie evening was arranged for the participants. All the participants enjoyed the movie. Movie was followed by a sumptuous dinner.
Debug Code was the first event of second day. 48 students divided in the team of 4 participants each were given 8 programming tasks for debugging over a period of 4 hours. It was a keenly fought contest and students of CIIT Wah were declared winner by an independent panel of judges after a careful evaluation.
Android application development competition was another highlight of the second day. 10 participating teams were given a theme on which they had to develop an android application within 3 hours. A panel of judges was asked to judge the participants on the basis of interface quality, solution formulation, code size etc. Team of CIIT Abbottabad was declared winner of the event.
Web page design competition was another event scheduled for the day. In this event students were given a theme to design a web page. 12 teams comprising of 3 members each participated in the event. Judges of the event evaluated the web pages and declared web page developed by the team of CIIT Wah as the best among the lot.
Poster designing competition was a test of participating teams’ aesthetics. 8 teams were given task to develop a poster on a pre-defined theme over a period of 3 hours. Team of CECOS university Peshawar were adjudged the winner of this event.
Final rounds of the Gam-Ectro provided a very interesting fight among the teams. Participating teams showed great skill in gaming. Students of Iqra National University won Counter Strike, where as the student of CIIT Attock was the winner of Need of Speed. FIFA was won by CIIT Lahore.
Closing ceremony of COMBits was also scheduled on the second day evening. Dr. Abdur Rehman (Director, CIIT Attock) was the chief guest on the occasion. Closing ceremony started with the final round of Brain Buster Challenge which after a tough fight was won by the team of CIIT Lahore. Following which HoD (CS) shared his views about COMBits 2015. Chief Organizer COMBits 2015 presented the report of the event and highlighted various activities of this mega two day event. The worthy Director in his speech thanked all the participants and congratulated the organizers on arrangements of such a wonderful event. His speech was followed by prize distribution ceremony and refreshments.
Students of participating universities thanked the organizers of the event on the hospitality shown. The organizers also thanked them for their participation and assured them of the same warmth in the COMBits 2016. Students of CIIT Attock thoroughly enjoyed and competed in the event. They were of the view that arrangement of this event helped in their grooming and confidence building.
