A Convocation for graduates of Spring 2018 and Fall 2018 sessions was held by COMSATS University Islamabad, Islamabad Campus on 23rd to 24th April 2019, at the Convention Centre, Islamabad. As many as 1,407 graduating students were awarded BS degrees in two different ceremonies.
The chief guest for the second session was the President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, who is also the COMSATS University Chancellor. While speaking on the occasion, Dr. Arif Alvi said that Pakistan had successfully eliminated terrorism, while its neighbouring country was encouraging extremism. “During the recent standoff between Pakistan and India, the Pakistani government and media showed maturity and talked about peace; whereas the Indian government and media wanted war.”
Dr. Alvi called for pursuing development agenda to reinvigorate education which was imperative for national progress and prosperity. The president reiterated government’s commitment for providing employment and business opportunities since it was state’s responsibility to offer favorable environment for business and investment in the country. Dr Alvi urged students to strive for unlocking new avenues of business and employment opportunities through the academic knowledge they had acquired during their studies. He further asked students to put their energies and knowledge for social betterment and human development which would eventually yield collective outcome in the form of prosperity.
He said Pakistan had been hosting 3.5 million Afghan refugees with a unanimous national resolve of hospitality. “Pakistan has embraced them open-heartedly at the time when other nations are closing their doors for migrants” he said, adding Pakistani nation did it as a gesture of Muslim brotherhood. He also lauded valuable contribution by COMSATS University by ensuring quality high education in sciences and technologies.
The president awarded medals and merit certificates among position holders, and conferred degrees to graduating students.
Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, Rector CUI, while presenting the annual report highlighted the major achievements of CUI during the year and informed the gathering that CUI had risen to the Top university of Pakistan on all major rankings. Prof. Qamar said that the efforts of the management were instrumental in reducing the budget deficit of CUI by 300 million rupees, adding that shortfall of funding had severely stunted the growth of the organization. Prof. Qamar also thanked the President for extending the support of his office for launching of campuses of CUI in Sindh and Baluchistan.
CUI has created a platform for young graduates for launching their own business and create opportunities for other graduates at its incubation center, added Dr. Qamar. Further he said that the success of CUI was in creating coursework that is relevant to the industry and launching unique initiatives like Hybrid Learning and Holographic Teaching that make course content available for students even in remote campuses.
The chief guest for the first and second ceremony was COMSATS Executive Director and Pro-Chancellor CUI Dr S. M. Junaid Zaidi. He awarded degrees to the students and addressed the gathering, in which he appreciated the performance of the students and dedicated faculty. The CUI Deans of Faculty, Members of Syndicate, Academic Council, as well as Campus Directors, Faculty members and senior management officials also witnessed the ceremony.
