Wednesday, February 14, 2024, CUI, Shama Munir

The Civil Engineering Department arranged a field visit of BS Civil Engineering, 3rd Semester students to the Golra Railway Station and Golra Railway Museum in Rawalpindi on November 28, 2023. This visit is positioned as an integral component of the curriculum pertaining to the subject 'Introduction to Transportation Engineering (for the third-semester students.

The principal rail line of Pakistan Railways, linking the southern regions of the country to Peshawar in the north, the station accommodates over 20 daily train traversals. Situated southwest of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, at an elevation of 1994 feet, the station exhibits Victorian architectural aesthetics, comprising five hall-like rooms fashioned from yellow stone masonry. Initially connecting Peshawar, Kohat, Havelian, and Multan, the station now assumes heightened significance due to the presence of its associated museum. The Golra Museum established in 2003 and subject to renovation in 2018 constitutes two galleries that curate artifacts and memorabilia spanning more than 150 years of railway heritage, dating back to the era of the British ruling in the subcontinent. The railway station, coupled with its museum, emerges as a prominent attraction for both tourists and local residents, progressively evolving into a focal point for railway enthusiasts.

The visit facilitated students in acquiring firsthand knowledge and practical experience in the domain of railway engineering. Furthermore, it afforded the opportunity to witness various facets of the railway system on-site, encompassing insights into railway tracks, sleepers, bearings, plates, fish plates, and gauge length. The culmination of the visit was marked by an expression of gratitude extended to the Railway administration.
