Strengthening Research Ties: Macquarie University Delegation at CUI

A distinguished delegation from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on 30th September 2025. The delegation was led by Prof. Michael Sheng, Head of the School of Computing, and was accompanied by Dr. Adnan Mahmood, Senior Lecturer in Computing, and Ms. Rumla Tahir, Senior Country Manager for South Asia & Middle East.

Macquarie University, ranked 138th in QS World University Rankings 2025 and among the Top 10 universities in Australia, is globally recognized for research excellence, innovative teaching, and international collaborations. Its School of Computing excels in data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital innovation.

Prof. Sheng delivered a guest lecture at CUI’s Business Incubation Centre (BIC) on: “AIoT Sensing for Smart Aging: Research Activities and Future Directions”. The session was attended by students from Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Bioinformatics. It highlighted the integration of AI and IoT technologies for innovative solutions in smart aging. The lecture provided students with practical insights into emerging AIoT applications in healthcare and smart aging,” said Prof. Sheng.

This visit opens new avenues for collaboration in research, education, and innovation between our institutions,” said Dr. Hammad Omer, Head of International Office of CUI, followed by discussions on joint research projects, student exchange, and HEC-Macquarie PhD scholarships. Both universities will also initiate a research matchmaking exercise to strengthen collaboration.

The delegation also attended the closing ceremony of “The Future of Energy: Innovation in Renewable and Clean Energy Technologies” at the Junaid Zaidi Library, CUI Islamabad, hosted by COMSATS Secretariat in collaboration with CUI.

Prof. Sheng was warmly welcomed by Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Nafees Zakaria, Executive Director, COMSATS Secretariat, who invited him to visit the Secretariat prior to his departure.
