Biography:
Dr. Hammad Omer is a Tenured Associate Professor at Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, COMSATS University Islamabad. He has been awarded 'Tamgha-i-Imtiaz' in the field of Engineering for his remarkable achievements/contributions in the field of Engineering; on 14th August 2023 by President Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Dr. Omer received his PhD from Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London in 2012 where he had been a Commonwealth scholar between 2008 and 2012. Earlier he did his MS in Bio-medical engineering (Medical Imaging stream) from Imperial College London in 2006, where he was honored with Bargarit Scholar of the year award for his outstanding performance. Dr. Omer joined COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Pakistan in March 2013. Soon after joining, he established ‘Medical Image Processing Research Group’ (MIPRG). The main focus of his research has been to conduct impactful research which would meet the national and global challenges in the field of Medical Imaging; in particular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). His research has gotten national and international recognition in a short span of time. Eight (8) PhD scholars have successfully completed their PhD’s under his supervision so far. Furthermore, more than 20 Graduate students have completed their MS Thesis and more than 50 UG students of ECE Department have completed their Final Year Projects (FYP’s) in different cutting-edge areas of MRI.
Dr. Omer has an excellent track record of publishing his research works in highly reputed international journals and conferences. He has published more than 150 research articles (in international journals and conferences of high repute) to date. Furthermore, his four inventions in the field of MRI have been granted International Patents by United States Patent Authority (USTPO). His students have won many National and International Awards (including Post-Doctoral Fellowships / PhD Scholarships) at Geneva Teaching Hospital, Switzerland; University of IOWA, USA; University of Barcelona, Spain; King’s College London; German Cancer Research Center, Dresden University of Technology Germany; University of Nottingham, UK; King’s College London; Case Western Reserve University, USA; Linkoping University, Sweden etc. because of their excellent research outcomes. Dr. Omer’s lab has established research collaborations with some of the world’s best universities including Imperial College London, Case Western Reserve University USA, Geneva Teaching Hospital, Switzerland, University of IOWA, USA and many more. Dr. Omer has given invited talks at different conferences held in USA, UK, Canada, France, Austria, Germany and Sweden. For example, he was invited to deliver a 50 minute talk entitled ‘Accelerating MRI using GPUs’ at GPU Technology Conference 2019, San Jose, Silicon Valley, California, USA in March 2019.
