COMSATS University Islamabad and CERN to Strengthen, Expand Collaboration

Islamabad, June 25, 2024 – COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) hosted a two-member delegation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) at its Islamabad Campus on June 25, 2024. The delegates comprised Dr. Luciano Musa, Project Leader ALICE, (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) CERN, alongside Dr. Luca Malgeri, Senior Researcher. They were also joined by Dr. Zafar Yasin, Director CERN Secretariat, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and Dr. Altaf Ur Rahman, Director, CERN, Switzerland.

It was informed that since joining ALICE in 2008 and achieving full membership in 2012, COMSATS University Islamabad has been integral to advancing scientific research in collaboration with CERN. To revive and expand this partnership, the university leadership recently formed a specialized CERN Liaison Group. Heading this initiative Dr. Tahir Naeem, Director Planning, Development, and Human Resource Development (P, D and HRD), CUI was designated as Focal Person to manage all collaborative efforts and future programs with CERN.

Dr. Hammad Omer, Head, CUI International Office, Professor Dr. Muhammad Anis-ur-Rehman, Head Department of Physics, CUI, Dr. Uzma Tabassam, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, and Rubina Bhatti, Additional Director (P, D and HRD) were part of the CUI CERN Liaison Group.

The discussants focused on expanding collaboration across CUI's seven campuses, embracing various disciplines beyond Physics, while exploring diverse avenues, like faculty fellowships, research partnerships, and financial support for visiting students, joint projects, and PhD supervision as well as plans for interdisciplinary collaborations.

The CERN officials expressed strong endorsement for CUI's proposed initiatives and broadening collaborative efforts.

COMSATS University Islamabad to explore collaborations

with Syrian Universities

Islamabad, May 6, 2024 – A delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Ministry of Education of the Syrian Arab Republic visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on May 6, 2024.

Dr. Rami Waheed Al-Dhulli, Syrian Deputy Minister of Education and Educational Affairs, and Ramez Alraee, Syrian Ambassador to Pakistan led the Syrian delegation. Delegates from the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research included Dr. Manal Sulaiman Saqr, IT Director; Mr. Yaseer Saeed Khadra, Director of Scientific Research; Dr. Aqil Saeed Mahfoud, Director of International Cooperation. While delegates from the Syrian Ministry of Education included Najeeb Suhail Salaq, Director (IT), as well as Mr. Ragib Ali Al-Jidi, Education Director. Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Samin, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training and Mr. Zain Ul Abedin, Joint Scientific Advisor, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, were also present.

Rector CUI, Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar extended a warm welcome to the delegates on behalf of COMSATS University, along with his team members.

Head CUI International Office, Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., presented detailed achievements and milestones of COMSATS University. He informed that so far, 11 Syrian students have studied at CUI. The potential collaborative opportunities proposed included, academic exchange programs, faculty development, cultural exchange, Technology and ICT education in Hybrid mode, and collaboration for innovation and research.

The delegates expressed their keen interest in seeking collaboration opportunities with COMSATS University in multiple domains related to virtual learning, teaching mechanisms, scientific skills, and skills proficiency of students and teachers in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), technology-based educational initiatives, and exploring avenues for bilateral scientific and cultural cooperation. The delegates also expressed interest in CUI’s assistance in improving the rankings of Syrian universities. The delegates informed that in the year 2000, a Syrian–COMSATS–COMSTECH Information Technology Centre (SCCITC) was established having the patronage of the Presidents of both countries. However, in the after math of the conflict in Syria and subsequent earthquake the project suffered immensely. The delegates expressed interest in reviving the SCCITC and improving its outlook.

Prof. Dr. Sajid Qamar assured immediate provision of trainings after the completion of codal formalities. He said that CUI will offer generous post-graduate scholarships to promising students from Syria.

COMSATS University Islamabad and University of Regina of Canada Forge Historic Global Collaboration

Islamabad, February 23, 2024 – In a significant step towards global cooperation, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) and University of Regina, Canada, have sealed a landmark MoU for a five-year term, already endorsed by the Government of Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Sajjad A. Madani, Registrar of CUI, and Mr. Haroon Chaudhary, Associate Vice-President (International) & Chief International Officer of the University of Regina, inked the MoU on behalf of their institutions during a physical ceremonious event held at the CUI Campus on February 23, 2024.

The occasion was honoured by the presence of Mr. Michael Lazaruk, Head of the Commercial Program & Senior Trade Commissioner of the High commission of Canada in Islamabad. H.E. Mr. Janbaz Khan, Consul General of Pakistan, and Mr. Ghulam Hussain, Vice Consul General, joined the ceremony virtually from Vancouver, Canada.  Dr. Hammad Omer, T.I., Head, International Office, presented an overview of COMSATS University Islamabad and highlighted past engagements of the university with Canada established since 2004 and proposed further connections between CUI and Canada.

Under the terms of the MoU, both universities intend to amplify their collaboration efforts, fostering direct contacts, educational advancements, and research partnerships between their constituents, including student, faculty, departments, and research institutes. This alliance is also poised to catalyse collaborative science and technology research projects, facilitate publications, and spearhead capacity building programs for the collective advancement of both universities.
